The Importance of Vector Artwork in Large-Format Signs

July 27, 2018

Raster Vs. Vector Files in Signs

At Speedpro, one of the first questions we will normally ask you is, “are you providing artwork to us, or are we designing this project for you?” If you tell us that you’re going to provide the files to us, that’s great. It saves us time and keeps more money in your pocket. However, design files can hold many potential issues. One of the most common issues we run into, is that we’re provided with raster files instead of vector files.

What’s the difference?

There are two types of computer graphic files, raster (composed of pixels) and vector (composed of paths). You can usually tell the difference between the file extensions. Vector based files will usually end in .eps, .ai, .sdg or .pdf. Some file extensions to watch out for are .bmp, .psd, .tif, .gif, .jpg.

This can create huge problems when enlarging the image after it has passed its “pixilation point.” Your artwork will start looking very jagged and unclear.

You can see the difference below:

Now, sometimes this can be fixed using design software by saving a raster image to a vector format. But this process doesn’t always result in a true vector image. So, even though a file might carry a “vector” extension, it still may not be usable for large signs, such as large, cut wall graphics or exterior building signs like channel letters.

What if I don’t have a vector file, but I need one for my project?

Alternatively, we can re-build the file for you, which you would then get to keep for an hourly graphic design charge. It really depends on how clear and crisp you want the image to look. It’s determined by the application too, if you’re looking to put a raster file on a business card, that should be fine because of the small scale.   Have questions for us? We’re happy to provide you with specific recommendations based on what you will be using your sign for and what type of files will be required – ask us about booking a no-cost consultation with one of our visual communication experts. Contact Speedpro Imaging Burloak today. 905-582-4873
