Do You Know Your 2019 Sign By-Laws?

January 15, 2019

Oakville has made significant changes to the city’s by-laws when it comes to signs. Is your knowledge up to date? Whether you’re opening a new location, or if you own an existing location – it’s always in your best interest to have the basics down. After a two-year long review and consultation, the updated by-law took effect on January 1, 2019. The changes are meant to reflect today’s business identification and advertising needs, as well as the city’s objectives when it comes to available space and overall character.

Since the last update, the by-law has gone through many amendments to include sign types such as electronic signs, mobile signs, fascia signs and advertising signs. This time however – for you, the local business owner, the changes were mostly focused on making the process more user-friendly. For example, there have been improvements to the format and web presence, using easy-to-navigate tables looking at usage and land designations. There’s also said to be a better capturing of sign types, more detailed regulations for each, and a better recognition of new technologies like Static Electronic Message Boards.

Another way the town is looking to simplify the process for the client is through enhanced exceptions and amendment processes, sign regulations will now have options available according to the impact of the change being requested – including exceptions, appeals and amendments. Permanent sign applications must now provide notification followed by as-built confirmation on sign installation so staff can better monitor the installation process and ensure signs have been professionally installed in a safe way, as approved.

Keep in mind, along with these changes, enforcement processes have also been updated and streamlined by including orders and administrative fees. A $100 fee will be charged for a second and subsequent orders issued by the same property, when there has been no changes in ownership of the property. In terms of revised sign permit fees, the fees are set to achieve full cost recovery for the sign program.
