A lot of folks skimp on their business cards, believing they are not that critical. They’re simply pieces of cardstock that has contact details on them. I’d say think again. A business card is as much of an item of marketing as your top brochure.
As soon as somebody offers you their business card, what is the first thing you notice? The graphics and colors, the thickness of the paper, and the contact details. At least that is what I first notice. A plain-Jane business card or flimsy business card handed to me out on the street lets me know as much about that person handing me the business card as if I were strolling into their business place for the first time.
The perforation marks or flimsiness lets me know that this individual did not invest a lot of money into their budget. It makes me wonder what else that individual did not believe was important enough for his business image. Does his company do sub-par work on its services? Is his product flimsy? And that plain-Jane business card – this one lets me know that this company has little to no personality or that it’ll take itself extremely seriously. It may be a bit boring to work with.
See all of the assumptions I made just imagining these two business cards? It’s what runs through individual’s heads as they get business cards, if not within their conscious, in their subconscious.
Why are business cards so critical?
It is your first impression. As you initially meet somebody at a trade show or sales conference or perhaps on the street, the first thing to do while talking business is to give that individual a business card. The business card informs a prospect about your business. You cannot make a second first impression; therefore, wouldn’t you rather that prospective client be impressed than turned off by the business card? Why take a chance on something so simple to fix?
A business card has a variety of uses. It’s possible to use it everywhere. It’s possible to slip a business card into your sales letters, invoice envelopes, greeting cards, pin them onto a bulletin board, utilize one as an advertisement in the newspaper … there are many ways to distribute and use a business card. All these include an element of marketing. A business card is a solid marketing tool that also is versatile.
It may encompass the message of your brand. With your brand’s color, logo, and even your brand’s slogan on the back of a card, this tiny piece of cardstock will communicate to people in one glance what might take you five minutes to explain. Folks do not want to listen to your explanation, yet they’ll take your business card and look it over. Then they will remember it and have all of your contact details for when they require your services.
