Wow Them With Window Graphics

You only have a few seconds to make an impression. Are you more likely to read a few lines of text or look up at a graphic?

Images can without a doubt tell a story about your business and convey an emotional response. We’ve all heard the saying “a picture is worth a thousand words,” but window graphics can also provide privacy and shade.  Different vinyl films can let some light in, block the light, or allow you to look through one-way. Graphics can be cut into shapes or cover the entire pane of glass. The possibilities are vast, customizable, and can be designed to suit a range of budgets.

Now that you have decided that window graphics are for you and you have settled on a design, here are some common mistakes to look out for.  Knowing a bit about the process helps you as the customer ensure that you are getting your money’s worth out of your window graphics.

  • Ensure that any printed vinyl is covered with a laminate before installation.  Vinyl films that are not laminated are susceptible to scratching, sun fading and water damage. Any graphics provider should know that cutting costs by skipping the laminate is a no-no.  If your location is in a high traffic or graffiti prone area, you should ask about a thicker laminate that is tougher.  Sure, it will cost you more upfront, but not as much as replacing any damaged panels.
  • One-way, or perforated vinyl (you can see out but they can’t see in) should only be laminated with an optically clear laminate.  While using this specialized laminate is costly, it is a MUST if you want to be able to see more than just blurry images through the graphic. If one competitive quote is substantially lower than the others, ask what kind of laminating film will be used (if any.)
  • As mentioned, perforated film and the proper laminate is costlier than regular laminated vinyl.  Ask yourself if you NEED to see through the glass, but be realistic with your answer.  One of our clients decided (against our advice) that solid vinyl was the way to go when adding a graphic to his glass door.  He almost instantly regretted making that choice the first time that he swung open his door and narrowly missed a customer standing on the other side.
  • Window Graphics are occasionally applied to the inside of the window, but this method is not right for every location. Graphics mounted on the inside are less effective on windows that are in direct sun during peak business hours, as the glare from the glass reduces visibility. Tinted windows might not be right for inside installations either, as tint will darken the images and reduce the “wow” factor of your graphic.
  • If your windows are large and require multiple vinyl panels one glass pane, ensure that your installer knows what he/she is doing.  The image on the seam between panels should line up perfectly and should be layered in such a way to prevent water and dirt from getting under the vinyl.  It is encouraged to ask to see your graphics provider’s other work- if they have done a great job, they will be more than happy to show you! If they’re reluctant, beware.

With the increased use of window graphics throughout many different industries, it is good to know a bit about what to look for and what questions to ask when looking for a provider. Hopefully these tips will help you avoid common mistakes, and get your money’s worth from a great advertising opportunity!
