Use the crosswalks and do not walk in the street if you can because vehicles also slip on ice. If it is a blizzard outside, dress in your brightest clothing in order for you to really stand out and be noticed.

On-Campus Reminders

Keep all sidewalks clear of ice and accordingly shovel. Dissolving products like rock salt work great on outside surfaces to keep them dry.

There are many instant ways to keep children, staff, and parents on alert within extreme winter conditions. As a matter of fact, the holidays are a fantastic time to place those safety reminders and signs on display all throughout the campus, since you will have more parents strolling the halls now for holiday events and school programs.

Strategically placed signage which reminds folks to “tread carefully” or “be aware of ice on sidewalks” are inviting reminders.

Wayfinding signs that point out key spaces of the campus are always crucial, yet particularly this time of year when traveling where you need to go rapidly is first on everyone’s minds.

Indoor, Fun Alternatives

Finally, be creative with playground alternatives when the children are forced to pack inside an auditorium or gymnasium because of increment weather. Using ideas like craft hour, a treasure hunt, and small group storytelling are fantastic methods of mixing things up a bit.

Winter is here to stay, at least for now, so attempt to incorporate some of these ideas for preventing spills and slips on the sidewalks and streets around your campus this season.

Strolling through a winter wonderland is fun and games until a parent or child slips and falls and becomes injured. Schools have a big responsibility to keep campus sidewalks and streets paved and clear of slippery snow and ice, since so many folks travel the grounds on a daily basis. Campus administrators are challenged to remain one step ahead of wintertime weather, yet they’re occasionally no match for Mother Nature’s perils.

Read further for some useful ideas about how to keep your students, your staff members, and students’ parents safe and protected against the elements this cold season.

Upfront Communication

Send kids home with printed pamphlets and material for their parents or you can blast out email reminders concerning critical safety details. Here are some suggestions, yet feel free to provide them your own spin:

Keep in mind, what may look like white, innocent fluffy snowflakes might be hiding harmful “Black Ice” beneath it. Do not assume just because the path does not appear slick, that it is not.

Have you ever seen that slips occur where you least expect them to? Like exiting your vehicle, for instance or inside the front door in which ice melts and water puddles are present. Correct foot attire is your friend; therefore, dress in sturdy shoes that have good treads.

When you are on ice — thin or not — avoid walking with your hands in your pockets. You will not have the ability to adequately brace yourself in case of a fall.
